Based on current climatic conditions and activity in 2023 to date, this report forecasts:
24–26 tropical storms (TS) are forecasted to form in the Northwest Pacific Basin (NWP) and the South China Sea (SCS) in 2023, which is in line with the long-term climatic average (LTCA). The number of strong typhoons (STY) will be slightly above average (about 9–11), while 6-8 TSs are forecasted to make landfall in China, which is close to the LTCA.
The number of tropical cyclones (TC) expected to affect overall China and South China are forecasted to reach 12-14 and 8-10 respectively, in line with the LCTA. East China and Shanghai may experience more TC this year, with the total number forecasted to reach around 9-11 and 2-3 respectively, highlighting that TCs are more active in East China and the risks of natural disasters may be higher than average.
